Widnes Academy welcomes local MP

Widnes Academy welcomed Derek Twigg MP to West Bank last week.

The Widnes and Halewood MP described pupils as "a credit to themselves, Widnes Academy and West Bank, showing an infectious passion for school and the local community.”

The incumbent Widnes and Halewood MP also shed light on his role as a Member of Parliament, offering pupils an insight into the daily work that goes on as an elected representative in the constituency, London and even further afield.

Mr Twigg’s visit ended following a meeting with Widnes Academy’s school council, in what the former Schools Minister dubbed as “a Cabinet-style grilling.”

Issues such as accessibility, public services and Spike Island were high on the agenda, as pupils shared their suggestions with their local MP and local council representative, Cllr Pamela Wallace.

Before departing, Mr Twigg gave students a motivational charge in which he urged pupils “to aspire and work hard towards their dreams, never allowing others to make them feel inferior as they pursue their individual ambitions.”

Mr Twigg commented:

“I am grateful to have been invited to visit Widnes Academy to talk with pupils about my journey as a Widnes schoolboy, to now, where I proudly represent Widnes and Halewood as our Member of Parliament.

“It is always refreshing to speak with passionate young people and to have the opportunity to encourage them to pursue their dreams and ambitions.

“In the case of Widnes Academy, pupils are so evidently energised and enthusiastic about being in school and driving the changes and improvements that we want to see in the local community, and that has been fantastic to see.”

Laura Kirchin, Principal at Widnes Academy, commented:

“We are incredibly grateful to Mr Twigg for taking the time to visit us on Friday morning.

“We firmly believe that Widnes Academy is the beating heart of West Bank, and is a hub that brings together everyone from our local community.

“As Principal, I am hugely proud of how the entire school community carries itself, and that has been no less true today as we have welcomed our local MP to show the very best of who we are.

“Our pupils have demonstrated, through their passion and zeal for our school and the local community, that the future for Widnes Academy and West Bank is very bright!”
